Vauban Books - dissidence in translation

Vauban Books is dedicated to challenging the ideological curation of contemporary European – and, especially, French – writing in translation. Too often, important voices are suppressed for not aligning with dominant narratives. By making these voices available in translation, we hope to foster open debate and a more nuanced and complex view of Europe’s current socio-political landscape.

A Counter-History
of French Colonization

Driss Ghali

The history of colonialism is today nearly everywhere reduced to a simple morality tale. On one side, brutal European oppressors; on the other, the Edenic indigenous societies they oppressed. In A Counter-History of French Colonization, Franco-Moroccan author Driss Ghali lays low all such comforting (and oh-so-corrosive) binaries.

Quote Vauban Books

“This is an elegant translation of a graceful French stylist, who makes provocative points with great care. The judicious introduction to this volume helps give a context to Camus' thoughts about the state of cultural and political affairs in France and Western Europe.”
